History

Alpha Chi Omega was founded on October 15, 1885, at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. Professor James Hamilton Howe, Dean of the Music School, invited seven young women from the school to attend a meeting for the purpose of forming a society. The first appearance of the seven founders - Anna Allen, Olive Burnett, Bertha Deniston, Amy DuBois, Nellie Gamble, Bessie Grooms and Estelle Leonard was in Meharry Hall, wearing scarlet and olive ribbon streamers attached to their dresses.

Alpha Gamma Alpha has been home to Alpha Chi Omegas in the Atlanta area for over 75 years.   Our membership base is very diverse, from new college graduates to 50+ year members, and includes a wide variety of backgrounds and collegiate experiences.  Alpha Gamma Alpha meets monthly to socialize, network, support our local collegiate chapters (Tau at Brenau, Beta Sigma at UGA, and Epsilon Phi at Georgia Tech), conduct chapter business, or participate in a philanthropic activity.  We are very proud to have received the Alumnae National Council Trophy in 2006 and the Alumnae Continuing Excellence Award in 2008. The Alumnae National Council Trophy is presented to the alumnae chapter who best exemplifies the ideals and mission of Alpha Chi Omega. The Alumnae Continuing Excellence Award is given to the alumnae chapter that received the National Council Award in the past five years and best exemplifies the ideals and mission of Alpha Chi Omega through its accomplishments in all areas. Also in 2006, AGA was the first alumnae chapter to reach the President's Roll level for over $50,000 of cumulative giving to the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation.
